What Is Solar Subsidy?
Solar subsidy is financial assistance provided by the central and state government to encourage rooftop solar adoption for residential customers. The subsidy reduces the upfront installation cost, making solar more affordable for homeowners.
Eligibility Criteria
Solar subsidy is generally available for residential consumers with a valid electricity connection. Commercial and industrial customers are usually not eligible for the central subsidy. The system should be on-grid (connected to the utility grid) and installed by an empanelled vendor.
Documents Required
Common documents include: electricity bill copy, consumer number, Aadhaar card, bank account details (for subsidy disbursement), roof ownership proof, and a recent passport-size photograph. Requirements may vary by state and current guidelines.
How the Subsidy Process Works
After installation and net meter commissioning, the vendor submits the subsidy claim through the designated portal. Once verified by the DISCOM and the nodal agency, the subsidy amount is directly credited to the homeowner's bank account. The process can take 30–90 days after commissioning.
Current Subsidy Amounts
Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana, the subsidy is approximately ₹30,000 per kW for systems up to 2kW, and ₹18,000 per kW for the 2–3kW portion. For a 3kW system, the total subsidy can be up to ₹78,000. Amounts are subject to change based on government notifications.
