How Delhi net metering works

Your rooftop system first serves loads at the property. When generation exceeds simultaneous use, eligible surplus flows to the grid and is recorded as export. When the property requires more than the plant produces, the meter records grid import.

• Self-consumed solar normally creates the strongest value because it avoids grid purchases at the applicable tariff.
• Export treatment, carry-forward and year-end settlement follow DERC orders and the relevant DISCOM’s current billing implementation.
• A normal on-grid inverter disconnects during a grid outage; net metering does not provide backup power.

Checks that should happen before installation

• Confirm the registered consumer, CA number, category, sanctioned load, dues and registered mobile details.
• Size the plant against consumption, roof area and the current regulatory/DISCOM capacity position.
• Prepare module and inverter datasheets, proposed capacity and a single-line diagram.
• Resolve joint ownership, roof rights, society authority or institutional authorisation before submission.
• Do not assume a previous approval at another property or DISCOM applies to the new connection.

Technical and safety evidence

• PV modules and inverter should match the approved system design and applicable standards.
• Provide AC/DC isolation, earthing, surge protection, cable routing and meter-space provisions appropriate to the site.
• Keep equipment serial numbers, invoices, test reports, photographs and as-built single-line diagrams organised.
• Any capacity or component change after feasibility should be disclosed and cleared through the applicable process.

Net, group and virtual net metering are different

Standard net metering generally links generation and consumption at the participating connection. Delhi policy also provides group and virtual mechanisms for qualifying multi-connection or shared arrangements, subject to the current DERC guidelines and DISCOM implementation.

• Group Net Metering can allocate generation across eligible service connections within the same DISCOM territory under the prescribed framework.
• Virtual Net Metering can support eligible shared/community arrangements where generation is credited to participating consumers.
• These models require additional agreements, allocation details and regulatory checks; they are not interchangeable with a normal home application.
