1. Start With a Site Survey, Not a Package Price
A credible proposal should start with your recent electricity bills, sanctioned load, roof dimensions, shadow sources, roof rights and daytime consumption. Be cautious when an installer recommends the same capacity before seeing the site or bill. The system should be sized to the customer's usable generation and consumption opportunity, not simply the largest capacity that fits.
2. Ask What the Quoted Price Includes
Compare like with like. A complete scope should identify module and inverter models, structure type and finish, AC and DC protection, earthing, lightning protection where required, cable routes, monitoring, installation, testing, transport, taxes and approval support. Ask the installer to separate confirmed inclusions from allowances and future utility charges.
3. Review the Structure as an Engineered Component
Delhi rooftops vary widely: RCC terraces, metal sheds, balconies, split roofs and elevated structures need different solutions. Ask how the structure deals with wind exposure, waterproofing, access, water tanks, parapets and maintenance clearance. A premium module on an unsuitable structure is not a premium system.
4. Verify Equipment and Warranty Responsibility
The proposal should identify exact models rather than only brand names. Check product and performance warranties, inverter warranty, structure or workmanship coverage, exclusions and who handles a claim. Manufacturer warranty and installer's service responsibility are different; both should be clear before payment.
5. Confirm the Approval Route for Your DISCOM
The correct workflow depends on the electricity connection and service area. Ask who prepares the application, technical documents, serial-number records, inspection file and commissioning follow-up for BSES Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna or Tata Power-DDL. Subsidy eligibility and net-metering approval should never be presented as guaranteed by the installer.
6. Compare Safety and Handover Evidence
Before commissioning, the customer should receive a clear handover covering shutdown procedure, monitoring access, equipment documentation, warranties and service contacts. Ask how cable management, isolators, earthing and equipment labels will be checked. Photographs and test records create a useful baseline for future support.
7. Look for Relevant, Verifiable Project Experience
A nearby project is useful when it resembles your roof or consumer type, not merely because it is nearby. Review projects with comparable capacity, structure constraints, DISCOM route or commercial load profile. Genuine case studies should explain the problem and design reasoning without promising that another customer's result will be identical.
8. Score the Installer on the Full 12 Points
Use these twelve checks: survey quality, bill-led sizing, shadow assessment, component specificity, structure plan, protection and earthing, approval scope, timeline assumptions, payment milestones, warranty responsibility, monitoring handover and after-sales response. The lowest headline price may be expensive if several of these are missing.
