General Space Requirements
As a rule of thumb, 1kW of solar panels requires approximately 80–100 sq ft of shadow-free rooftop area. A 3kW system needs around 250–300 sq ft, a 5kW system needs 400–500 sq ft, and a 10kW system requires 800–1,000 sq ft. These estimates vary based on panel wattage and tilt angle.
Why Shadow-Free Area Matters
Even partial shading on solar panels can significantly reduce energy generation. Shadows from nearby buildings, trees, water tanks, or antenna structures should be avoided. A proper site survey identifies the best panel placement for maximum sunlight exposure throughout the day.
Higher Wattage Panels Need Less Space
Modern solar panels with higher wattage (540W, 550W, or 580W) produce more power per panel, meaning fewer panels are needed for the same system size. This is especially useful for rooftops with limited space.
